We All Love Our Moms….
Mom jeans that is! Denim is a constant trend and the humble jeans make the fashion wardrobe must-have list, year after year. The skinny jean has been a staple for over a decade now, but lately it has been surpassed by the currently cool and comfy mom jean. Thanks to the 90’s trend we’re seeing at the moment, along with films like Once Upon A Time in Hollywood with its 60’s throwback vibe – the high waisted, straight or flare leg mom jean is the new stylish piece on everyone’s shopping list.
Universally flattering, the high waist gives us all a fabulous silhouette and hugs our curves in all the right places. Muffin tops, which were the skinny jean trade off, are now modestly kept under wraps, spanx style. Plus for those of us not blessed with a womanly shape and have a more athletic, boyish figure, these jeans cinch us in, giving the illusion of a more defined and feminine waistline.
The straight & flare leg hails back to the 60’s, or you can use the paperbag tuck technique on your hems, to give that sought after mom jean, tapered shape and instant street cred a la the 90’s supermodel brigade. Or 90’s IT celebs like Winona Ryder, the BH90210 cast and Melrose Place. All that was old is new again and this vintage look is everywhere.
The best way to wear these jeans is let them do the talking! Tuck a plain tee or vintage rock tee in and pair with white sneakers, converses (total 90’s grunge), biker boots, platform wedges (hello 60’s) or kitten heels. Throw on a longline blazer, leather biker jacket or try the double denim trend, which is hot right now, by going with a denim jacket in a slightly different shade of blue to the jean.
Finally we have a new denim jean to love! We embrace this new shape and bid farewell to the skinny jean for now. The mom jean isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, with it ticking all the important boxes. It’s comfortable, versatile, flattering and on trend along with vintage editions being stocked everywhere from retail chains to thrift stores. Original Levi, Tommy Hilfiger & Wrangler to name a few labels and for a fraction of the original price. I tell you, moms have never been so cool….
